About Kol Rina

Welcome to Kol Rina, a vibrant Carlebach shul in the heart of Nachlaot, one of the oldest communities outside the Old City of Jerusalem. At Kol Rina, Jews from all walks of life—unaffiliated, modern-orthodox, Chassidic, and scholars alike—come together to pray, sing, and celebrate in an atmosphere of holiness and joy, continuing the inspirational legacy of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Baruch Rubanowitz. Join us in this warm, spirited space where Shabbat comes alive, and every soul feels at home.

Kol Rina Synagogue's mission is to serve as a spiritual home that celebrates Judaism through song, study and community engagement. Housed in a historical bomb shelter, our synagogue provides a unique blend of strength, protection, and spiritual nourishment!

From a Cistern to a Spiritual Center ...

Nachalot is one of Jerusalem's most historic neighborhoods, established in the late 19th century as a series of over 30 courtyard neighborhoods, designed to provide a healthier and more spacious living environment outside the congested Old City. These neighborhoods were centered around communal courtyards, integral to the social and communal fabric of the area.

The cistern on Beer Sheva Street in Nachalot is a historic structure that played a crucial role in the community's development. Originally built to collect and store rainwater, it was essential for meeting the water needs of the local residents, particularly important in Jerusalem's arid conditions.

During the mid-20th century, as regional tensions and conflicts increased, the cistern was converted into a bomb shelter. This transformation was part of a broader effort across Jerusalem to provide safety and protection for its residents during periods of conflict. The cistern-turned-bomb shelter served as a refuge, shielding the community during times of war and unrest.

Now, many decades later, the bomb shelter on Beer Sheva Street shows significant signs of wear and tear. It is in dire need of repair to restore its integrity and continue serving its purpose. The age of the structure has led to deterioration, which compromises both its historical significance and its functionality as a safe space for the community. Renovations are essential not only to preserve this piece of Nachalot's heritage but also to ensure it can continue to provide safety and serve new purposes in the community's life.
